The Correlation of the Tumor Markers to the Linico-Pathologic Findings of Stomach Cancer

Abstract
Pre-and postoperative serum levels of 4 tumor markers -CEA, CA 19-9 CA 125, and TPA-were determined by enzyme immunoassay in 32 patients with stomach cancer from June, 1992 to December, 1992. Through the review of medical records, the serum
levels
of 4
tumor markers were evaluated according to pre- and postoperative positive rate, tumor site, invasiveness, lymph node metastasis, histologic type, TNM stage, tumor size, and hepatic and peritoneal metastasis.
@ES The following results were observed.
@EN 1) The preoperative positive rates of CEA, CA 19-9, CA 125, and TPA were 28%, 15.6%, 6.3%, and 15.6%, respectively.
2) There were no significant difference in preoperative positive rates according to tumor site, invasiveness, lymph node metastasis, histologic type, Borrmann type, TNM stage, and he patic and peritoneal metastasis.
3) The significant correlation of serum level of preoperative CEA to tumor size was observed. (r=0.54, p<0.05)
4) There was significant difference between positive rates of pre- and postoperative serum CA 125 levels. It was thought that postoperative elevation of serum CA 125 level was due to tumor handing during the operation.
5) It was concluded that the preoperative determination of tumor markers was not worthwhile in evaluating early detection and progression of stomach cancer.
